It was during the Alabama vs Arkansas football game about five years ago that I played the role of “Father of the Year”. You see I had promised my daughter that I would paint her room and as long as it wasn’t hot pink, I would allow her to select the color. I had assumed that if I ruled out hot pink I would have eliminated any off the wall color she would have selected, all but forcing her to choose some neutral color like “Caramel Kiss”, “Almond Milk” or at worst a light shade of pink like “Rose Petal’s Breath”. Well, to my surprise she selected lime green, and not just any lime green, “electric lime green”; that just means that they took some lime green paint and ran an electrical current through it to make it even lime-er. We are talking lime green on steroids! Well, it was on that Saturday afternoon that I was following through with my promise. I hated that color! I hated it so much I must not have been very careful when I painted it, because I did a horrible job. I mean I got it on the door, on the window seal, on the ceiling and on the baseboards. I felt so awful, because most fathers would love to go play with their daughter in her room. Not me. Every time I was in that room I got a headache from the lime greeness! A few weeks ago, my daughter asked me and my wife if she could paint her room again. Well, I was not gonna open my mouth this time. You ain’t gonna fool this country boy again! Before I could shout out “well you ain’t picking the color!”, she said “I want something that looks classic.” That was music to my ears! So last weekend I loaded her up in the car and we went to Lowe’s to pick out a classic color, a light gray called urban sunrise. So the last few nights, I have spent painting over that lime green with a light classic gray color. Am I am happy to say the lime green is gone, no more headaches, no more dreading going into my daughter’s room, no more electric lime green. “Green free at last! Green free at last! Hallelujah, we are green free at last!
I’m not gonna lie to ya, it wasn’t easy. In fact, it was down right hard. Since my previous paint job was so bad, I had to repaint all of the baseboards, the window trim and the doors and the closet so I could rid myself of all of that green. I mean to come home from a long day at work it would have been nice to set down in my chair, eat me some food and watch some television until I drift off to sleep. That would be the easy thing to do. But, if I did that I would still have the lime green. Instead, I worked hard and now I can enjoy the fruits of my labor and rest easy knowing I accomplished a task that I had been wanting to fix for a long time and that felt good; real good. That got me to thinking…there are a lot of things that we all feel like we need to change, fix or redo. The biggest thing we complain about is not having the time to fix them. Maybe the time excuse is just that – an excuse. Maybe the real reason we haven’t made those changes is that we really just are not prepared for the hard work we will have to put in to complete our task, or we don’t have the know how to make those changes. Maybe we are not just talking about home improvement projects either. You see I believe that at our core, most of us are not happy with some of the things in our lives. It might be a bad habit that you need to break, or maybe a good habit you want to start. The point is all of us have some work to within our lives to make us better servants of the Almighty. My challenge to you today is – just do it! You will be glad you did. You don’t want to look in the mirror everyday and see that electric green do you? Put a fresh coat of the blood of Jesus in your life and start the process of remodeling your temple of God. Romans 12.2 says:
“Do not be conformed to this world but for us to be transformed, by the renewing of your mind”
The Greek word for “renewing” means “to renovate, or to have a renovation” of your mind. Sometimes you need more than a paint job, you need a renovation project. It won’t be easy. In fact, in may be downright hard work and it may take days, weeks months or even years to complete. But one day when you are resting in your mansion over the hilltop, you’ll be glad you did.
