Today is one of the most hated days in America, “TAX DAY”! Today many people will frantically be calling their accountants and rushing into the post office to make sure that they make that 11.59 deadline. Every year I hear the same old story from some of the same old people:
“It ain’t right! It ain’t right that we have to pay all of these taxes for things that we as Christians don’t even agree with! I mean these government officials are some of the most ungodly, crooked, evil people the world has ever known and here we are…Godly people….spending our hard earned money to support all of their ungodly, crooked, evil policies and habits.”
Well…actually it is right, at least to an extent. You see the rulers of the day during the life of Jesus were by far more ungodly, crooked and evil than any of the rulers we have in our good country today. Now I will say, we have had some doozies! We have had some leaders that haven’t been much of a friend to Christianity, but nothing like the Roman Emperor Caligula who was the emperor during the ministry of Jesus (When you have some time to spare, check out http://listverse.com/2010/05/09/top-10-worst-roman-emperors/.) As we all know the same criticisms and questions came up in the days of Christ just as they do today.
Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.”
So that’s it! Enough said! Lesson learned! “Just As I Am” has been sung, and many of us have repented of our previous comments and concerns! But wait a minute, it seems like we always stop there because we are so concerned about rendering (as little as possible I might add) to Caesar, that we forget the rest of what Jesus said:
“…and to God the things that are God’s”
So just a thought… as you rush this evening to make sure you put the finishing touches on your tax forms; before you e-file or rush off to the post office. Instead of asking yourself did I render everything correctly on my taxes? Ask yourself did I render everything correctly to God? Was I a good steward of all of the blessings He has so richly given me? You know it is a serious offense to rob the government on your taxes, but it is a much more serious offense to rob God! Better yet just think of the refund that He will issue us back in His blessings!
“Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”
Wow! Opening up the windows of heaven… I would rather have that than a refund anyday!! I love the Church! Matt
